Discover the strategies that drive success and learn how smart marketing can transform your business.
I am a hard-working man who knows that starting a business and making it take off is not easy. But thanks to my experiences as an entrepreneur and reports from clients I have served over more than 20 years, I also know that many have no idea what Marketing is, how to benefit from it, or, what is worse, end up being deceived by ‘miracle strategies.’
Since my professional goal is to help small and medium-sized companies, I decided to write this article to explain Marketing in more detail, offer strategies that can help, and, thus, prevent people like you from falling into these traps.
Marketing, how it started.
Marketing, as we know it today, began to become popular in the early 1960s, when the ‘Father of Modern Marketing,’ Philip Kotler, introduced concepts that emphasized understanding consumer behavior and creating value-oriented strategies to help companies sell more.
As competition intensified over time, businesses needed a way to stand out, connect with their target audiences, and drive sales. Marketing has become the solution to this challenge, enabling companies to understand their customers, communicate with them, deliver meaningful value, and find ways to be unique.
Today, Marketing continues to be essential to business growth. While copying others may seem easy, it is not effective over time. Understanding that Marketing is about finding your differentiators, building relationships, and delivering value is the first step to long-term success.
The Four Marketing Ps: The Pillars of Growth
1. Product: Delivering What Your Customers Need
It may seem simple, but your product is the foundation of your marketing strategy. Whether it’s a physical item or a service, it’s what you offer to meet your customers’ needs.
But your product isn’t just what you offer. It’s how you offer it. After all, anyone can sell a T-shirt, clean a house, or even build a website. This is where Marketing comes in. It highlights your unique way of delivering a service or a specific feature of your product to create value for your customers.
With the right strategies, such as beautiful packaging design or engaging promotional materials that highlight your unique benefits, you’ll find that first impressions make all the difference.
2. Price: Positioning for Value
Price is an interesting aspect of Marketing. We can decide on a lower-price strategy, believing that this will increase sales, but customers usually associate cheap products or services with lower quality. If we charge more, they may not see the value and think that it isn’t worth it. It’s tricky.
In other words, the price of your product or service determines how it is perceived in the market, influences purchasing decisions, and can also define a company’s fate. So, we need to choose wisely.
My recommendation for small and medium-sized businesses is to find a safe spot within the price range in your neighborhood, taking into consideration not only production costs but also the marketing budget and some savings to enable your business growth. Of course, we can’t forget about the value you are delivering to your customers.
If necessary, we at Prugner’s Digital Marketing can create a Marketing Plan by analyzing your marketplace to find the perfect price for your product or service. We can also create content strategies, SEO – Search Engine Optimization, or ad campaigns focused on your benefits to justify your value.
3. Place: Reaching Your Audience Where They Are
“Before exploring the world, we should know how to walk around the block.”
—Unknown
I have never felt as strongly compelled to share this quote as I do today after seeing many small businesses spending resources to reach people who are far away and unlikely to become customers.
We need to understand that Place is not just where and how your product is made available; it is also how we ensure that your offers are accessible to your customers at similar costs and quality without harming your company. The time and fuel it takes to hold a meeting or paint a house across town, as well as ship a product to another city, is different than what we spend when we are selling to those who are close by.
Furthermore, it is much easier to show that you are trustworthy to those you can easily look in the eye, and it is much cheaper to reach those who are in your neighborhood with Local SEO or other Promotion strategies, as we will see below.
4. Promotion: Spreading the Word
Promotion is how you communicate your product’s value to your target audience. It encompasses advertising, public relations, content marketing, and more. But I know that if you are reading this article, you are probably not Amazon, Google, or Walmart with millions of dollars to invest in Marketing, and understanding this is the best way to start discussing Promotion strategies for your company.
Since our budget is usually limited, or we don’t have time to wait for organic strategies to deliver results, we need to create an impactful first impression to take advantage of every opportunity to win a customer or make a sale. That’s why I believe Promotion should be the fun part. Promotion should be about showing our community how much we love what we do and, by doing this, demonstrating that our product or service is better.
In other words, Promotion for small businesses is about showing why you’re unique, your brand personality, and your value to create that eye-to-eye moment and the handshake that can seal the deal. That’s why it’s important for you to make a great first impression, from your brand to your website, to engage and inspire the trust needed to not only reach people but turn them into your loyal customers.
Why Imitation Isn’t a Winning Strategy
Since Marketing is all about using Product, Price, Place, and Promotion strategies to make your business unique, there shouldn’t be so many companies copying each other. Don’t you agree?
Many businesses fall into the trap of imitating their competitors, thinking that if it works for them, it will work for us, too. While it’s important to understand your competition, replicating their strategies can lead to a race to the bottom.
When companies do everything the same, the primary differentiator becomes price. Competing on price alone is risky; it erodes profit margins and makes businesses vulnerable to larger competitors with bigger budgets. The smallest player is often the first to be cut down, unable to sustain the financial strain of a price war.
